Yeanor Kabia Emerges Media Personality of the Year

By Mackie M. Jalloh

In a profession where credibility is earned through dedication, courage, and consistency, few moments capture the essence of journalistic excellence more than public recognition from one’s peers. That moment arrived in spectacular fashion for Yeanor Kabia, whose remarkable contributions to the media landscape earned him the coveted title of Journalist of the Year 2025/26 at the IMC/SLAJ Media Awards held in Makeni.

The accomplished journalist, who currently serves as President of the Sierra Leone Reporters’ Union (SLRU), emerged as the biggest winner of the night, securing not only the highest individual honour in Sierra Leonean journalism but also the Outstanding Investigative Reporting Award. The double recognition cemented his reputation as one of the country’s most respected and influential media practitioners.

Held at the prestigious Wusum Hotel on June 13, 2026, the awards ceremony formed part of the activities marking the 55th Annual General Meeting of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ). The gathering attracted journalists from across the country, media managers, development partners, government officials, and advocates of press freedom, all united in celebrating professionalism and excellence within the industry.

For many attendees, the crowning of Yeanor Kabia came as no surprise. Over the years, he has built a reputation for fearless reporting, unwavering commitment to ethical journalism, and a relentless pursuit of stories that hold institutions and individuals accountable. His investigative work has consistently demonstrated the power of journalism to inform citizens, expose wrongdoing, and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Those familiar with Kabia’s career describe her as a journalist whose work extends beyond headlines. Through meticulous research, balanced reporting, and an uncompromising commitment to facts, she has become a symbol of responsible journalism at a time when the media industry faces increasing pressure from misinformation, political polarization, and economic challenges.

Presenting the Journalist of the Year Award, Nyanda Tarawalie, Head of Human Resources, Organisational Development and Administration at ActionAid Sierra Leone, congratulated Kabia on her exceptional achievements. She praised journalists who continue to uphold the principles of professionalism, integrity, and accountability despite the numerous obstacles confronting the profession.

The Independent Media Commission (IMC), which partnered with SLAJ to organize the awards, described the event as an important platform for recognizing outstanding contributions to journalism and encouraging higher standards within the media sector.

Speaking during the ceremony, IMC Chairman Joseph Egbenda Kapuwa Esq. emphasized that the awards are intended to celebrate journalists whose work demonstrates excellence, impact, and dedication to the public interest. He noted that quality journalism remains an essential pillar of democracy and national progress.

SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara also described the occasion as a historic milestone for the media industry. According to him, the 2025/26 edition marked the first IMC/SLAJ Media Awards following resolutions adopted by journalists during SLAJ’s Annual General Meeting in Bo in 2024.

Kamara commended the support of ActionAid Sierra Leone and other development partners whose contributions helped ensure the success of the programme. He acknowledged that their sponsorship significantly eased the logistical and financial challenges that had previously affected the organization of media awards.

ActionAid Sierra Leone used the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to promoting media freedom, social justice, and civic engagement. Representatives of the organization highlighted the important role journalists play in amplifying marginalized voices, exposing injustice, and supporting democratic governance.

In a move that was warmly welcomed by attendees, ActionAid announced the introduction of a new Outstanding Social Justice Reporting Award, which will be sponsored by the organization beginning with the 2026/27 IMC/SLAJ Media Awards.

Yet despite the various announcements and celebrations, much of the spotlight remained firmly on Yeanor Kabia. Her recognition represented more than personal success; it symbolized the value of persistence, professionalism, and impactful journalism in Sierra Leone.

Many observers view Kabia’s achievements as a reflection of the highest ideals of the profession. Her ability to pursue difficult stories, maintain ethical standards, and consistently produce work that resonates with the public has earned her admiration from colleagues and stakeholders alike.

As the curtains closed on an unforgettable evening in Makeni, Yeanor Kabia stood not only as the recipient of two prestigious awards but also as a shining example of what journalism can achieve when guided by integrity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to truth. Her triumph serves as inspiration to aspiring journalists across Sierra Leone and beyond, demonstrating that excellence, hard work, and dedication to the public interest remain the true hallmarks of a distinguished career in journalism
