The Catholic Diocese of Makeni has issued a heartfelt goodwill message to the Muslim community in Makeni City on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, emphasising unity, mutual respect, and shared spiritual values between faiths.
In a statement dated 18th March 2026, from the Bishop’s Office, the Diocese addressed “Esteemed Imams, Beloved Muslim Brothers and Sisters in Makeni City,” congratulating them on the successful completion of Ramadan.
Delivering the message on behalf of the Catholic Christian community, the Bishop of Makeni Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Bob John H. Koroma, highlighted the spiritual significance of Ramadan, noting that it is “a period marked by fasting, prayer, almsgiving and sincere devotion.” He further expressed admiration for the commitment of Muslims, adding that the season reflects “a vivid witness to the universal human desire for renewal, gratitude and solidarity with the poor and the needy.”
The message drew strong parallels between Islamic and Christian values, particularly during this period where Ramadan coincides with the Christian Lenten season. According to the Bishop, “both traditions invite us to turn inward, to repent, to pray, and then to emerge renewed, ready to serve the world with greater charity.”
Referencing the Church’s teachings, the statement cited Nostra Aetate, affirming that all humanity shares a common origin and purpose. It emphasised that the Church “rejects all forms of discrimination” and calls for the promotion of “peace, justice and human dignity.”
The Diocese also commended the virtues cultivated during Ramadan, stating:
“Your observance of fasting teaches discipline of the body and the soul… your acts of almsgiving embody a concrete expression of compassion.”
Reinforcing a message of coexistence and collaboration, the Bishop urged both Christians and Muslims to deepen mutual understanding and work collectively toward societal progress:
“Let us seize this moment to deepen mutual understanding and promote our shared moral pillars of truthfulness, justice, humility and generosity.”
The statement concluded with prayers and well wishes for the Muslim community:
“May the light of this Eid Al-Fitr illuminate your homes with peace, may your families be blessed with health and prosperity.”
This message stands as a powerful reminder of interfaith harmony in Sierra Leone, particularly in Makeni, where religious tolerance continues to serve as a cornerstone for peace and national cohesion.
