DIB Supports SLBC After Fire Incident

By Mahamood Fofana

A leading contender for the All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer position, Dr Ibrahim Bangura, has provided financial and material support to the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) following a devastating fire outbreak that caused extensive damage to its headquarters in Freetown.

The fire incident, which occurred on April 8, 2026, significantly affected the top floor of the SLBC building, with the office of the Deputy Director General, Mohamed Asmieu Bah, among the hardest hit. According to reports from the institution, the blaze destroyed a wide range of critical assets, including computers, broadcasting monitors, office furniture, mobile phones, cash, and sensitive official documents. The scale of destruction has been described as substantial, with losses estimated to run into millions of leones, dealing a severe operational and administrative blow to the national broadcaster.

During a visit to the affected facility, Dr Bangura expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as not only a loss to SLBC but also a setback for Sierra Leone’s media sector and democratic framework. He emphasized the indispensable role played by public broadcasters in shaping national discourse, promoting transparency, and ensuring that citizens remain informed on key issues affecting governance and development.

In a show of solidarity and practical support, Dr Bangura donated 5,000 US dollars along with two laptop computers to assist SLBC in its immediate recovery efforts. The contribution, though modest relative to the scale of the damage, has been widely regarded as a timely intervention aimed at helping the institution stabilize its operations and begin the process of rebuilding.

Receiving the donation, Josephine Kamara, Director General of SLBC, expressed appreciation for the gesture, noting that such support is critical in moments of institutional crisis. She acknowledged the challenges posed by the fire but reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to continuing its mandate of delivering accurate, reliable, and timely information to the public despite the disruption.

Mohamed Asmieu Bah also welcomed the assistance, describing it as a meaningful contribution during a difficult period for the organization. He highlighted the need for enhanced preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future and called on additional stakeholders, including government entities and private sector partners, to support the rebuilding process.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the vulnerabilities faced by key public institutions in Sierra Leone, particularly in terms of infrastructure resilience and emergency preparedness. As the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation works to recover from the damage, the focus is expected to shift toward both immediate restoration and long-term safeguards.

SLBC remains a central pillar in the country’s media ecosystem, playing a crucial role in public education, national cohesion, and democratic engagement. The rebuilding process following the fire will therefore be vital, not only for the institution itself but for maintaining the continuity and credibility of public service broadcasting in Sierra Leone.
