A shocking discovery in Port Loko District has sent ripples of fear through local communities after the body of a military officer, identified as Sergeant Bayoh, was found in a pit near the Commodity Trading Company (CTC) Mining site at Gbere Junction. The Northwest Regional Police Division has confirmed that a full-scale investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
According to initial reports, the body was discovered on October 27, 2025, by Umaru Bilkish Kamara, a Community Liaison Officer with CTC Mining Company, alongside Corporal Conteh (M18181706), also attached to the company. Preliminary findings indicate that the officer may have been attacked and killed by unknown assailants before being disposed of in the pit, raising serious concerns over the level of violence in the area.
The incident has sparked alarm among residents, who fear for their safety and are calling for urgent action by security authorities. Community members described the event as “terrifying,” noting that such an occurrence is unprecedented in recent memory and has heightened anxiety throughout Gbere Junction and surrounding settlements.
In response to the discovery, a joint operation involving the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) was immediately deployed to secure the area and investigate the circumstances of Sergeant Bayoh’s death. Law enforcement sources have indicated that several arrests have already been made, though details regarding suspects remain confidential as investigations continue.
Ambassador Bon Wurie, the Resident Minister of the Northwest Region, condemned the killing, describing it as a “senseless and tragic act.” He urged law enforcement agencies to tighten security measures and to conduct a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. Ambassador Wurie also called on local authorities, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders to cooperate fully with security personnel to ensure the area remains safe during the ongoing inquiry.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that Gbere Junction and neighboring communities are currently under heightened security, with patrols and checkpoints established to prevent further incidents. Residents have expressed relief at the visible presence of security forces but continue to demand swift action and clear communication from authorities regarding the investigation.
The Northwest Regional Police Division emphasized that public safety remains a priority and assured citizens that updates on the investigation would be provided as soon as new information emerges. The incident has also prompted broader discussions on security in mining areas, particularly where private companies and local communities intersect, highlighting the challenges faced by authorities in maintaining order in remote or industrial zones.
Community leaders have called for the establishment of long-term safety measures and better coordination between the mining companies and security agencies to prevent similar incidents in the future. Meanwhile, relatives and colleagues of Sergeant Bayoh have expressed shock and grief, demanding justice for their fallen colleague.
As the investigation unfolds, the tragic death of Sergeant Bayoh underscores the urgent need for heightened security protocols, community vigilance, and rapid response mechanisms to ensure that the citizens of Port Loko District and those working in mining zones are protected from acts of violence.
The case continues to dominate discussions locally, with authorities urging calm and cooperation while promising a transparent and thorough investigation. The Northwest Regional Police Division and RSLAF remain committed to identifying the perpetrators and preventing further loss of life in the district.
