Sierra Leone’s determined march toward agricultural independence is taking on a bold and strategic dimension, as the government intensifies collaboration with the military to transform the nation’s food production systems. In a powerful demonstration of coordinated leadership and national vision, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) have reinforced their alliance to significantly scale up rice production in Tormabum one of the country’s most promising agricultural frontiers.
At the heart of this renewed push is the Feed Salone initiative, a flagship program of the government designed to reduce dependence on imported food and reposition Sierra Leone as a self-sufficient agricultural economy. Leading this charge, Henry Musa Kpaka, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, joined forces with Amara Idara Bangura, Chief of Defence Staff, for a high-level inspection of key agricultural infrastructure in Tormabum. Their joint presence sent a strong message: the government is not only committed but actively mobilizing all sectors of national capacity to deliver results.
The visit was far more than a routine inspection it was a strategic engagement aimed at accelerating progress on the ground. Central to discussions was the ongoing development of irrigation systems, which are widely recognized as the backbone of sustainable, large scale farming. The delegation examined extensive canal networks, water regulation mechanisms, and land development works, all of which are crucial to enabling year round rice cultivation.
Minister Kpaka underscored the transformative potential of these investments, describing Tormabum as a future epicenter of rice production in Sierra Leone. His optimism reflects the government’s broader agricultural blueprint, which prioritizes mechanization, infrastructure, and institutional partnerships. By ensuring that farmers have reliable access to water and modern farming systems, the government is laying a solid foundation for increased productivity and long-term food security.
Equally commendable is the evolving role of the RSLAF, which is redefining its national service beyond traditional security functions. Under the leadership of Lieutenant General Bangura, the military has emerged as a formidable force in agricultural production. Currently managing thousands of acres of farmland across the country, the RSLAF is actively contributing to national food supply chains while setting an example of discipline and efficiency in large scale farming.
In Tormabum, the military’s ambitions are particularly noteworthy. Already cultivating hundreds of acres of cashew farms, with plans to expand significantly, the RSLAF is positioning itself as a key agricultural stakeholder. Nationwide, its involvement in rice farming spanning districts such as Moyamba, Port Loko, and Tonkolili demonstrates a well-coordinated and impactful intervention that aligns seamlessly with government priorities.
Lieutenant General Bangura reaffirmed the military’s unwavering commitment to this cause, expressing strong interest in expanding operations in Tormabum. He highlighted the area’s fertile land and improving infrastructure as ideal conditions for scaling up production. His remarks reflect a forward-looking approach that recognizes agriculture as both a security and economic imperative.
Another major highlight of the visit was the near completion of the Tormabum Rice Hub, a modern facility designed to revolutionize post harvest processes. Equipped with advanced milling, storage, and aggregation capabilities, the hub is expected to drastically reduce losses, enhance the quality of locally produced rice, and create efficient market linkages. This development is a testament to the government’s holistic approach one that goes beyond production to address the entire agricultural value chain.
The collaboration between the Ministry and the military stands as a shining example of visionary governance. It reflects a leadership that is not only responsive to the needs of its people but also proactive in crafting sustainable solutions. By harnessing the strengths of multiple institutions, the government is accelerating progress toward food sovereignty while creating opportunities for economic growth and rural development.
