In a renewed effort to strengthen collaboration for sustainable development and effective local governance, the Bombali District Council and the Makeni City Council (MCC) jointly hosted the Country Director of Welthungerhilfe (WHH) on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the Bombali District Council Hall.

The high-level dinner meeting brought together key stakeholders from both councils, the MADAM Institute, and development partners to discuss shared priorities for Bombali District. Central to the dialogue was the urgent need for sustainable waste management solutions across Makeni and its surrounding communities.

His Worship Mayor Abu-Bakarr Kamara Lamtales of Makeni City Council expressed deep appreciation to WHH for its continued partnership in improving the city’s sanitation systems. He highlighted the organization’s technical, logistical, and youth employment support, which has significantly enhanced waste collection and disposal operations.

“WHH’s support has transformed how we manage waste in Makeni,” Mayor Lamtales noted. “We remain committed to working closely with WHH and other partners to build a cleaner, greener, and healthier city.”

Dr. Mohamed Mark Babah Sisay, Chairperson of the Bombali District Council, praised WHH’s impact within Makeni but appealed for similar interventions in rural areas of the district, where waste management challenges remain acute.

“An inclusive approach that supports both city and district councils will ensure balanced growth and sustainability,” Dr. Sisay emphasized.

The Chief Administrators of both councils echoed the call for stronger coordination, recognizing that poor waste management poses serious environmental and health risks. They reaffirmed their readiness to collaborate on strategic, community-driven programs aimed at achieving long-term sustainability.

In closing, the WHH Country Director thanked both councils for their hospitality and pledged to deepen the organization’s partnership with local authorities.

“Sustainable waste management requires unity, innovation, and shared responsibility,” he stated. “WHH will continue to work hand in hand with both councils to improve environmental health and livelihoods across Bombali District and Makeni City.”

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing joint initiatives that promote cleaner cities, stronger institutions, and resilient communities.
