FREETOWN, Sierra Leone, 14th April 2026: The Judiciary of Sierra Leone will, for the first time, host the prestigious meeting of the ECOWAS Judicial Council from 20th to 24th April 2026 at the Atlantic Hotel, Lumley Beach in Freetown.
The five-day high-level gathering will bring together approximately 12 Chief Justices, 15 Judges, and distinguished judicial officials from across the ECOWAS region. The meeting is being held under the current Chairmanship of the Honourable Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda.
The ECOWAS Judicial Council serves as a key platform for strengthening judicial cooperation, promoting the rule of law, and enhancing the administration of justice within member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Hosting this landmark event underscores Sierra Leone’s growing leadership role in regional judicial reform and its commitment to upholding judicial independence, accountability, and cross-border legal collaboration.
Speaking ahead of the conference, Chief Justice Komba Kamanda emphasized the importance of the gathering; “The hosting of the ECOWAS Judicial Council Meeting in Sierra Leone marks a significant milestone not only for our Judiciary but for the entire nation. It reflects our collective commitment to strengthening judicial institutions across the region, fostering cooperation among our courts, and advancing the rule of law as the cornerstone of democratic governance and sustainable development in West Africa.”
The conference will feature deliberations on key issues affecting the judiciary in the region, including judicial independence, and emerging challenges in the administration of justice.
