Sierra Leone Joins UN Statistical Commission in New York

By Sahrfoa Matturie

Sierra Leone’s Andrew Bob Johnny has participated in the 57th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) held in New York City from March 3 to March 6, 2026, joining global leaders in the field of statistics to discuss emerging trends, challenges, and innovations in official data systems.

Johnny attended the session as part of Sierra Leone’s high-level delegation, accompanied by Francis Tommy, Director of the National Statistical System. The delegation represents the country’s commitment to strengthening its national statistical capacity and aligning with international best practices in data collection, governance, and utilization.

The UNSC annual meeting convenes representatives from National Statistical Offices (NSOs), regional statistical organizations, and international institutions to exchange knowledge and set global standards for official statistics. Discussions at this year’s session focused on several priority areas, including social and demographic statistics, environmental and climate change data, measurement of well-being, and the integration of artificial intelligence and other technological innovations into statistical operations.

“The session provides an important platform for sharing expertise, identifying challenges, and exploring modern approaches to data governance,” said a senior official from Statistics Sierra Leone. “Participation allows Sierra Leone to ensure its statistical practices are aligned with global standards and emerging methodologies.”

Beyond the formal sessions, the Sierra Leone delegation engaged with international partners to enhance collaboration on statistical development. Scheduled meetings included discussions with Esri”], the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). Esri has previously supported Sierra Leone in providing geographic information systems and data-collection tools for national surveys, while UNFPA and UNECA offer technical expertise in population, housing, and socio-economic data.

Officials highlighted that the outcomes of these engagements are expected to support preparations for Sierra Leone’s 2026 Population and Housing Census. The knowledge gained from international partners will also strengthen broader national initiatives, including data governance reforms, digital integration in statistical operations, and capacity-building for national statisticians.

As the highest decision-making body for international statistical activities, the UN Statistical Commission plays a pivotal role in setting global statistical standards and providing guidance to member states. Sierra Leone’s active participation reflects the government’s dedication to improving the quality, accessibility, and credibility of national data systems, which are essential for evidence-based policymaking, planning, and development.

By engaging in high-level discussions and technical collaborations at the UN Statistical Commission, Sierra Leone aims to advance its statistical infrastructure, enhance analytical capabilities, and ensure that official data meets international standards while addressing national development priorities.
