Mercury International Pays Le20M to 30,000 Winners

By Marion (Rion) Bangura

More than 30,000 football bettors across Sierra Leone received a collective payout exceeding Le20 million (Le20 billion old Leones) this week, as Mercury International recorded what it describes as its largest single football disbursement so far in 2026. The nationwide payout, executed on Monday, March 2, represents a significant spike in winnings compared to previous months and signals an intensifying momentum in the country’s betting market.

Company representatives confirmed that the bulk of the winnings—approximately Le14 million—went to customers who placed bets through physical retail outlets, while online participants accounted for Le6 million of the total payout. The distribution cut across all regions, with beneficiaries ranging from regular small-stake players to high-frequency punters.

According to company officials, the payout volume reflects heightened engagement driven by ongoing international football competitions, which traditionally boost betting activity. Compared to February’s disbursement of over Le8 million to roughly 5,000 winners, the March figures mark a substantial increase in both the number of winners and the total value paid out.

The human stories behind the numbers have amplified public interest. Among the beneficiaries was Charles Obi, a long-standing customer who secured Le24,000—his third notable win in five years of consistent participation. He described the experience as validation of persistence, encouraging other bettors to remain patient and strategic.

Another widely discussed winner was Musa Kargbo, a senior secondary school student who turned a Le5 stake into Le41,000. Speaking after collecting his winnings at the Walpole Street payout center, he indicated that the funds would be directed toward his school fees. His case has been cited by onlookers as an example of how minimal stakes can yield substantial returns under favorable outcomes.

Founded in 2006, Mercury International has evolved into the country’s most expansive sports betting operator, maintaining a wide retail presence while strengthening its online platforms. The company asserts that it has paid out trillions of Leones to customers over the years, consolidating its dominance within the local gaming industry. Industry analysts note that the sustained growth of football betting reflects broader digital penetration, mobile money integration, and the cultural popularity of European league competitions among young Sierra Leoneans. With participation rates climbing and payout volumes rising, the betting sector appears poised for continued expansion as players await the next round of fixtures and potential windfalls
