By Mackie M. Jalloh

Fatima Maada Bio, the First Lady of Sierra Leone, participated in high-level deliberations at the United Nations Security Council addressing the pressing challenges facing children whose education has been disrupted by conflict, instability, and climate-related crises.

The discussions took place during the Council’s 10,113th meeting under the agenda of international peace and security, focusing specifically on Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict. Mrs. Bio attended in her dual capacity as First Lady of Sierra Leone and as President of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), bringing a unique perspective on the intersection of child welfare, women’s leadership, and education.

The meeting was convened under the presidency of the United States, with First Lady Melania Trump extending the official invitation to Mrs. Bio. She expressed appreciation for U.S. leadership in placing the education of children in conflict zones at the forefront of global security and development discussions.

While she did not deliver a formal speech, Mrs. Bio actively engaged in the deliberations, highlighting OAFLAD’s flagship initiative Building Resilience for Women and Children in the Face of War and Climate Change. Her contributions emphasized the critical role of technology in expanding access to education for displaced and vulnerable children, while also underscoring the need for safeguards to prevent exploitation and abuse in fragile settings.

Her presence at the Security Council reflects Sierra Leone’s increasing engagement on global advocacy for women and children, linking domestic priorities with international strategies to protect and promote education during crises. Discussions explored innovative solutions for delivering learning opportunities to children in conflict-affected areas, reinforcing the importance of collaboration among governments, civil society, and international organizations. Mrs. Bio’s participation reinforces her commitment to advancing education, child protection, and women’s resilience, showcasing Sierra Leone’s leadership on issues of global significance and highlighting the nation’s contribution to shaping policy responses for vulnerable populations in war and climate-affected regions.
