The Government of Sierra Leone has successfully evacuated 24 of its citizens and embassy staff from the Islamic Republic of Iran in response to the recent escalation of military strikes and retaliatory actions in the Middle East.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the evacuees have been safely relocated to Armenia. The group consists of 14 students pursuing studies in Iran, one private citizen, three Sierra Leonean diplomats, and six locally recruited personnel from the Sierra Leone Embassy in Tehran. The operation followed the activation of emergency protocols in light of the rapidly evolving security situation in the region.
Officials emphasized that the government has been closely monitoring developments and coordinating through diplomatic missions to ensure the safety of all nationals. Updates from Sierra Leone’s embassies indicate that citizens residing in neighboring countries, including Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Israel remain safe.
The Ministry has advised Sierra Leoneans in affected regions to adhere strictly to local safety measures, including curfews, movement restrictions, and emergency procedures. Citizens are also urged to maintain regular communication with family members and the nearest Sierra Leonean diplomatic mission.
“The safety and welfare of Sierra Leonean citizens remain our top priority,” the Ministry reiterated. Officials assured that further updates would be provided as the situation develops and confirmed that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard the evacuated individuals.
This evacuation underscores the government’s commitment to protecting its nationals abroad during international crises and highlights the proactive role of diplomatic missions in crisis response and citizen support. The successful relocation of students, diplomats, and staff demonstrates coordinated planning and swift execution in a highly volatile security environment, providing reassurance to Sierra Leoneans across the Middle East.
The government continues to monitor regional developments closely and remains prepared to implement additional emergency measures should the security situation deteriorate further.
