AG Clarifies Govt Stance on Political Party Deregistration

By Mackie M. Jalloh

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay Esq., has clarified the government’s position on proposals contained in the 2025 Constitutional Amendment Bill that seek to deregister political parties failing to win a seat in two consecutive elections.

Speaking during a public consultation with Members of Parliament and key stakeholders, the AG explained that the provision originated from recommendations by the Tripartite Committee and does not necessarily reflect the government’s official position. “The government is not in support of deregistering political parties,” he said, emphasizing that political parties serve vital roles beyond winning elections.

Minister Sesay underscored that political parties are fundamental to democratic governance, representing minority interests, holding those in power accountable, and providing alternative voices in national discourse. “Winning elections is not the sole purpose of a political party. Their contribution to democracy extends far beyond electoral success,” he added.

The AG’s clarification comes amid public debates and concerns from opposition parties and civil society groups, who viewed the proposed deregistration clause as potentially restrictive and detrimental to political pluralism. According to Sesay, the government remains committed to fostering an inclusive political environment where all legally recognized parties can participate, advocate, and hold power accountable without fear of arbitrary deregistration.

He also noted that consultations on the Constitutional Amendment Bill are ongoing, with the government encouraging stakeholders to provide input to ensure that proposed reforms strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and transparency.

By addressing the controversy directly, the AG reassured political actors and the public that the government values political diversity and will not pursue measures that undermine the fundamental role of opposition parties in Sierra Leone’s democracy.
